Iulia-Alexandra Oprea, Ph.D.
Research Fellow
Iulia-Alexandra Oprea is specialized in Turkish history and politics and has working experience in academia, journalism and youth work. She pursued a PhD at Sapienza University of Rome with a thesis on identity and alterity in contemporary Turkey. During her PhD she gave lectures on Ottoman and Turkish history and politics, and EU-Turkey relations at Petru-Maior University of Targu Mures, Romania. As part of the European Forum Alpbach of 2017 in Austria, she participated as assistant on the “Turkey at the crossroads” seminar and in 2018 she worked on a project about active citizenship and democracy at Istanbul Arel University. She is one of the Turkey-Europe Future Forum fellows in 2019, a project of Stiftung Mercator in cooperation with TUSIAD, under the patronage of Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. Besides her journalistic and policy papers published in Foreign Policy Romania, Mediterranean Affairs and Osservatorio sul Mediterraneo, she wrote several academic papers and book chapters. Iulia has more than a year experience in youth work as coordinator of the YouthBank Mures program and is one of the founding members of the Society for Intercultural and Interdisciplinary Studies.
