Securitizing migration and mobility: The power of information during COVID-19

Mass media plays a worldwide role in coronavirus disease tracking through constant reporting and live updates dashboards. The impact of the media is also strong on migration issues, which remains a hot topic globally, and continues to be up on the front pages of news outlets.

The session about the impact of media on migration and mobility, during the COVID-19 pandemic, took place on November 25th, 2020. We had the pleasure to host Dr. Jakob Moritz Eberl, a Research Associate at Vienna University, who now conducts research in the framework of the H2020 project REMINDER (Role of European Mobility and its Impacts in Narratives, Debates and EU Reforms), particularly aiming to map the media discourse on mobility and migration in Europe as well as to assess its impact on public perceptions.

This event took place in the framework of the project “The World after COVID19: Migration and Mobility“,  implemented by YouthNest (Greece), Ekonomiks (Kosovo), and the Fagaras Research Institute (Romania). Within the framework of this project, we are organizing a series of online sessions with a focus on migration, funded by the International Alumni Center, Berlin.
