The workshop will explore the development of modern Turkish identity since the founding of the Republic in 1923 to this day, by investigating the allegedly (un)changing role of Islam and nationalism. The workshop aims to go beyond the traditional boundaries of dividing Turks between Kemalists and Islamists, modern and conservative, and Western or Eastern-minded groups in interpreting contemporary realities.
