Way too often is one faced with a casual approach to survey questions exhibited by practitioners and undergraduates/graduate students alike, or with a recipe-like approach to developing surveys. Without a proper understanding of the underlying principles and of the methodology of devising better survey items, a ”how-to” list-like approach to survey design is unlikely to result in good quality surveys.
Accordingly, the course is designed to guide thinking about survey quality and aims to shape how practicing survey professionals approach their work. Since a thorough understanding of the multitude of aspects needed to be taken into consideration well exceeds the length that one can afford to dedicate to the topic during a summer school, the course will center on one of the most critical and often overlooked aspects of the survey design process the lifecycle of a survey from the design and quality perspective.
