A (Very) Short Introduction to the History of Western Architectural Styles – Part 2

Online (Zoom), August 14, 2020, 15.00-18.00, (Romanian time, English/Romanian – depending on the audience)

Of the visual arts that make up the core of the discipline of Art History, architecture is the one that touches unswervingly our daily lives. We all live and work in buildings or built functional spaces modeled according to our needs, social beliefs, and cultural values.  Acquired knowledge about architectural styles, and an understanding of “why” and “how” the buildings we pass by came into existence, helps shape our relationship with the built environment and increase our awareness of the importance, meaning, and necessity of preserving the architectural patrimony.

We will cruise through more than two thousand years of Western architectural history with the help of visual aids, historical context, and ad hoc quizzes.  Participants will become familiar with the characteristics, “vocabulary,” and design principles of the main styles, and with representative buildings of Western architecture.

The course is open to everyone with an interest in the history of art and architecture.  No prior formal training in art history is needed.  Participants to this class will acquire notions that may enhance their appreciation of the buildings that they engage with daily in familiar environments, or when visiting far-away places.

The course relies on visual aid material presented in PowerPoint and will be delivered in Romanian and/or English, depending on the audience.
